STA MSB PT 1

Magnetic Suspension Balance – Ultra High Vacuum up to 150 bar

Description

On point

The LINSEIS MSB PT 1, a magnetic suspension balance, facilitates gravimetric measurements across an extensive temperature and pressure range, even in the presence of aggressive media. This magnetic suspension balance system comprises several key components, including a balance for recording measurement values, a suspension coupling responsible for supporting the sample’s weight, a position sensor to measure the levitation part’s position, and a control unit for managing the suspension coupling.

The system’s unique feature is the contactless transmission of the sample’s weight, accomplished using a levitation magnet and a holding magnet. The levitation magnet, composed of a permanent magnet, pairs with the holding magnet, which is an electromagnet suspended from the balance. The position sensor continuously reports the real-time position of the levitation magnet, while a PID controller is employed to maintain a stable levitation position using the electromagnetic force as the control input.

The magnetic coupling enables the establishment of a microbalance under standard environmental conditions. This design effectively shields the balance from extremes such as high temperatures, elevated pressures, and corrosive or aggressive media, making it suitable for a wide range of challenging measurement scenarios.

Density

The magnetic suspension balance is not limited to weight measurements alone; it can also be employed to analyze density using Archimedes’ principle. In this method, a mass with a predetermined volume is placed on the balance. By measuring the buoyant force exerted by the sample, the density can be accurately calculated.

The advantage of the magnetic suspension balance lies in its compact design, which allows for the analysis of density over a wide range of temperatures and pressures. This versatility makes it a valuable tool for density measurements across a variety of conditions.

With the magnetic suspension balance dimensions like

  • sorption,
  • diffusion,
  • surface tension,
  • and density can be measured easily.

Furthermore chemical reactions e.g.

  • corrosion,
  • decomposition,
  • and combustion will be recorded
  • and production processes can be simulated (coating, polymerisation, dehydration, etc.).

Metal version

The metal version of this instrument offers a broad range of applications. It enables measurements in conditions spanning from ultra-high vacuum to pressures of up to 150 bar and operates within a temperature range from -196°C to 2400°C. Additionally, it accommodates the handling of corrosive and toxic media through the use of specialized coatings applied to the metal measurement cell. This versatility makes it suitable for a wide array of challenging environments and substances.

Glass version

When working with highly corrosive media, the glass version of the instrument is recommended. The glass version incorporates fused-in glass components for sensitive parts within the measurement cell, such as the levitation magnet and the iron core used for the position sensor. The magnetic coupling and automatic decoupling functions are analogous to those of the metal version.

The glass version offers a temperature range of up to 900°C and is suitable for operating within a pressure range of up to 1.3 bar. This configuration ensures reliable measurements while safeguarding sensitive components from the corrosive nature of the media being studied.
